Side product done in Finland

FERGY AS just finished manufacturing a charcoal retort in Finland, which is now in the final stages of the installation process. The estimated production of this facility will be more than 6 tons of charcoal per year.

Charcoal is made by heating wood or other organic materials in a low oxygen environment with temperatures rising up to 450°C. Doing so removes water and other volatile elements, allowing the finished product to burn at high temperatures with very little smoke. The process, which is called pyrolysis, is exothermic - it means that heat is released during startup. The gasses that evolve in the pyrolitic process are much cleaner in terms of smoke emissions.
